The Story
The 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible stands as one of the Jet Age’s most striking designs, but what truly sets this example apart is its concours-quality, body-off-frame, nut and bolt restoration performed to an exceptionally high standard. Its surfaces, components and finish were returned to show-level condition with painstaking accuracy, making this one of the finest restored Super 88 Convertibles anywhere. The combination of dramatic 1950s styling, rare Tri-Power performance and such an impressive restoration elevates this car far beyond any typical example.
Finished in factory-correct Code 20 Festival Red, the car’s presentation reflects countless hours of preparation and craftsmanship. The paint exhibits remarkable depth and clarity, while the chrome and stainless trim have been expertly replated or polished to a mirror finish. A correct black nylon power top, properly fitted weatherstripping and fully restored exterior brightwork contribute to a truly show-quality exterior appearance. Many NOS components were sourced to ensure accuracy and authenticity throughout the restoration, further enhancing the car’s pedigree.
Its interior—trimmed in the original Code 329 Red and Ivory combination—has been restored with the same meticulous approach. From the stitch patterns to the dash brightwork, nuts, bolts and screws, gauges and WonderBar pushbutton radio, every detail presents as factory fresh. Panel alignment, door fitment and convertible-top operation all reflect the careful attention typical of top-tier restoration work.
Under the hood, the highly desirable J-2 Tri-Powered 371 CI Rocket V-8 is restored to as-new condition, complete with its distinctive batwing air cleaner and correctly finished components throughout the engine bay. Producing 300 HP and 400 lb-ft of torque, the Rocket V-8 is paired with Oldsmobile’s 4-speed Jetaway Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Factory power steering and power brakes were rebuilt to operate as seamlessly as they did when new. Dual exhaust, wide whitewall tires and full-size wheel covers complete its authentic presentation.
The chassis and undercarriage are equally impressive, finished in correct factory colors with properly detailed suspension components, fuel system, brake lines and hardware—all restored, refinished or rebuilt to concours standards. The underside quality mirrors the topside, reflecting the no-compromise approach applied throughout the entire restoration. With its rare J-2 Tri-Power performance package, striking color combination and extraordinarily high-caliber frame-off restoration, this 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible stands as a benchmark example—an exceptional representation of Oldsmobile’s Jet Age craftsmanship restored to better-than-new condition.
