The Story

The Chevrolet 454 SS pickup was introduced in 1990 as GM’s new muscle truck with power and torque that was the pinnacle of sports truck performance in its time. Taking a drivetrain from the heavy-duty assembly line, Chevrolet decided to add a huge engine (and subsequent power) to the muscle truck with a fuel-injected 454 CI big-block V-8 monster that offered 230 HP and 385 lb-ft of torque. The Chevrolet 454 SS caused a ripple effect in the truck market that spawned some healthy competition from its competitors, including Ford’s Lightning.

From a design perspective, the 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS wore huge stickers on either side of the box and a red Bowtie badge up front. The 1990 models were all black with a blacked-out grille, fog lights in the air dam and chrome wheels, with additional colors (Summit White and Victory Red) appearing in 1992 and 1993, the latter of which was the final year of production. On the inside, unique bucket seats wrapped in red upholstery and a center console help identify the pickups as something special. A performance handling package was standard, which included a beefier front sway bar, Bilstein shocks, quicker steering and 275/65 R15 tires that were hefty for the era.

This 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS Pickup was sold new at Charles Lee Chevrolet-Oldsmobile Inc in Rockwood, Tennessee. As per the original window sticker affixed to the window, this example is outfitted with air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, tinted glass, a tilt steering wheel, electronic speed control, an engine oil cooler, transmission cooler, power front discs, power drums in the rear and more. The original owner purchased this example with the intention of keeping it in showroom new condition. Stored in a climate-controlled environment, this 454 SS looks like it did the day it left the showroom floor and shows only 3,213 miles on the odometer at the time of writing. This 454 SS comes documented with original Window Sticker, owner's manuals, owner’s materials package and original paperwork from when it was bought new. This 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS is a true time capsule, showing just 3,211 miles and preserving the raw power and muscle truck heritage that made it an instant classic.
