The Story
For 1968, Shelby GT350 and GT500 production moved to the A.O. Smith facility in Ionia, Michigan, where Mustang convertibles and fastbacks received updated fiberglass body panels and other components to set them apart from regular Mustangs. Most notably, the front fascia got a different look with a larger grille opening, fog lamps and a hood with a pair of forward-placed scoops. The new rear-end treatment incorporated a duck-tail spoiler and a unique rear panel with 1965 Thunderbird sequential tail lights.
As listed in the Shelby American Automobile Club’s 1968-70 Shelby Registry, this 1968 Shelby GT350 fastback was delivered new to Shelby Automotive Inc. in Southfield, Michigan, with a manufacture plate and believed to be used as a company demo. Ordered in factory Code M Wimbledon White paint with Guardsman Blue side stripes, this GT350 fastback is equipped with a black knit vinyl interior.
Powered by a matching-numbers J-code 302 CI 4-barrel V-8, the Shelby is also optioned with a C4 SelectShift automatic transmission, power steering, power front disc brakes, a tilt steering column, tinted glass, shoulder harnesses, the extra cooling package, the visibility group, wheel lip moldings, the sport deck rear seat, the interior decor group, a heavy duty battery and a tachometer. The aluminum 10-spoke Shelby wheels are wrapped in radial tires. This Shelby comes documented with a Deluxe Marti Report and is listed in the Shelby registry.
