The Story
Convertible muscle cars have always been the most desirable and rare among collectors due to their extremely low production numbers, as buyers of the day rarely optioned their high-performance muscle car with an open top. Examples like the Hemi Cuda convertible, LS6 Chevelle and GTO Ram Air IV all bring three to four times more than their coupe counterparts, as most were built in such low numbers.
In 1969, Shelby’s GT500 sat comfortably at the top of the pyramid of Mustang hierarchy. That model year saw the introduction of a restyled Mustang, and the GT500 received all the same changes. The car’s overall footprint increased, but the styling was markedly more aggressive. At just over $5,000 in 1969, the GT500 convertible was the most expensive Shelby Mustang money could buy. Under the hood lay a gargantuan 428 CI V-8 that was topped with a Holley 4-barrel that was backed with either a close-ratio 4-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic. Inside, a roll bar, inertia-reel harnesses and special trim maintained the performance-oriented, upscale character of the GT500. Only 245 GT500 convertibles were produced that year, and of those, only 69 were optioned with a 4-speed manual transmission..
