1966 Ford Mustang GT K-Code Fastback

Introduced in April 1964, Ford’s sporty new Mustang created an overnight sensation and remains the subject of the most successful new-car launch of all time. Reflecting on its effect, the Mustang’s visionary “Father,” Ford Motor Company Vice President Lee Iacocca, was later quoted as saying “… the excitement in the automobile business is to do something different; to pioneer a new concept and to win.” He continued, “We reached way out, and the success that the Mustang has enjoyed is proof that Americans really like something which is entirely new and dramatic.” Nearly 60 years later, his words ring truer than ever before.

Launched midway through Ford’s legendary “Total Performance” era, the Mustang’s wide array of performance options was topped by the high-winding K-Code 289 CI V-8 with 271 HP in solid-lifter tune and a 4-speed manual transmission. So equipped, the K-Code 2+2 Mustang Fastback gained everlasting fame as the basis for Carroll Shelby’s legendary 1965-67 SCCA B-Production championship-winning GT350s, which put Chevrolet’s Corvettes back on their trailers everywhere they appeared.

This particular 1966 Ford Mustang GT K-Code Fastback was built on January 6, 1966, at the Metuchen, NJ, plant and delivered new to Frontier Ford in Niagara Falls, NY. Its original owner specified his new GT in the spectacular color combination of Sauterne Gold with a standard black interior. Power comes from the K-code 289 CI V-8 backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. This stunning GT fastback was equipped with tinted glass, dual redline tires, GT equipment, a fold-down rear seat, an AM radio, a full-length console and styled steel wheels.

The restoration was completed by marque expert Fix Motorsports, who stripped the body to bare metal before repainting it in its original Sauterne Gold color. The drivetrain was rebuilt and the engine compartment was detailed with correct finishes just as it left the factory. The undercarriage was detailed with batch primer, overspray, paint daubs and chalk marks as well.

As per result of the no-expense-spared restoration, this 1966 Mustang has gone on to win AACA Hershey Nationals in 2024. Examples restored to this level are rarely ever seen or almost never come to market. This is certainly a Mustang enthusiast’s dream.
