1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

The introduction of the Corvette’s Sting Ray body style caused a sensation that grossly understated its impact on the North American sports car market. Due to popular demand, the St. Louis factory hired a second shift, but it still couldn’t build cars fast enough to meet dealer orders. Beneath the skin was an all new ladder-frame chassis with independent rear suspension, the adoption of which enabled the center of gravity to be significantly lowered, improving both road holding and ride. Big-block models also debuted and came with a special bubble hood to accommodate the stronger horsepower engines, distinguishing the cars from the 327 Corvettes.

Corvette owners who selected the new L72 427 CI Turbo Jet engine option at a $312.85 cost were confused by a factory recall in late ‘65 for an "engine modification." The application of a new air filter sticker that read "Turbo Jet 425 HP," in place of the "Turbo Jet 450 HP," helped GM's anti-racing faction that was concerned the 450 HP in a 3,300-pound car was way over the top to calm the insurance industry. On a dyno, it would still produce the same 450 HP at 6,400 RPM, however, with the new reading at 5,600 RPM, the engine produced only 425 HP.

This 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe was sold new at Dumas Milner Chevrolet in Jackson, Mississippi, and it was ordered new in the extremely desirable Code 974 Rally Red with a standard black vinyl interior. Under the hood is the matching-numbers L72 427/425 HP, which has received CCAS engine pad and cylinder case certification and is backed by a Muncie M21 4-speed transmission.

The distinctive stance of the Sting Ray is unmistakable as it sits on the factory-optional cast aluminum Knock-Off wheels mounted on correct goldline bias-ply tires. Adding to the stunning exterior look of this Corvette is the very desirable side-mounted exhaust system providing the bold, unique look of the classic Corvette while delivering the impressive roar of the big-block horsepower. Other desirable options include an AM/FM radio, Soft Ray tinted glass, F41 suspension and a teakwood steering wheel. It’s hard to argue with the attraction of the big-block Corvette.
