The Story

Among the most desirable and collectible first-generation Camaros, the 1969 L89 Camaro SS represented the pinnacle of big-block performance. The L89 option combined the already formidable 396/375 HP solid-lifter big-block engine with lightweight aluminum cylinder heads, shaving nearly 75 pounds off the front end and dramatically improving handling. While delivering identical horsepower to the iron-head L78, the L89’s rarity and racing pedigree made it one of the most sought-after performance options of the muscle car era. The L89 option was the additional $394.95 over and above the standard $316 L78 cost, pushing away many potential buyers. Due to the cost, just 311 examples were produced in 1969, marking it as one of Chevrolet’s most exclusive and competition-inspired builds.

This particular SS/RS L89 offered here is one of the finest examples in existence, finished in its striking factory color of Azure Turquoise, and is an outstanding representation of the breed. Ordered new through Humphrey Chevrolet in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it retains its matching-numbers L89 396/375 HP V-8, M21 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission and 4.10 Positraction rear axle, forming the ultimate high-performance drivetrain combination.

Equipped with desirable factory options including tinted glass, the Endura front bumper, and the rare Chambered Exhaust system, this car delivers both presence and unmistakable sound. The Rally Sport (RS) package adds visual distinction with its hideaway headlights, bright exterior accents and refined trim, creating a perfect balance of aggression and sophistication.

Camaro Hi-Performance certified, this car’s authenticity and correctness have been documented, ensuring confidence for the most discerning collector. Other documentation included with this ultra-rare Camaro includes the Car Order/Purchase form Humphrey Chevrolet to the original owner, a notarized letter/statement from the original owner, photos of the car before being restored and during restoration, the original title, loan paperwork from the original owner, period receipts, correspondence from both Chevrolet and the dealership with the original owner, ownership history and more. With its rare color, matching-numbers drivetrain and status as one of only 311 L89 Camaros built, this example stands among the elite as an exceptional showcase of Chevrolet’s engineering excellence and the enduring appeal of the first-generation Camaro SS.
