The Story
The 1970 model year is renowned as the peak of the early muscle era, when engineering developments coaxed more power than ever from increasingly large powerplants. This would also be the last year before emissions laws and insurance regulations began to choke off those very same muscle mills. For 1970, Chevrolet added a new version of its Mark IV big-block to the Chevelle’s options list. The LS5, with a 10.25:1 compression ratio, hydraulic camshaft and Quadrajet carburetor, was rated at 360 HP and a whopping 500 lb-ft of torque. This was “the engine that gives the SS454 its name. And its go,” a Chevrolet sales brochure stated.
