1996 Dodge Ram Pace Truck Edition Pickup

The year 1996 was a big one for Dodge. The performance division of what was then Daimler Chrysler had just introduced the new Viper GTS coupe, which was chosen to pace the 80th Annual Indianapolis 500 that May. Dodge took things a step further by designating a special Ram 1500 Sport Cab model as the official truck of the event. This particular example was used at the 1996 Indianapolis 500 and was owned by former chairman, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Tony George. With just 3,651 miles on the odometer, it remains a rare and well-preserved piece of automotive history.

Under the hood, power comes from the 5.9L Magnum V-8, an upgraded version of the legendary 360 CI LA-series engine that debuted in 1992. Featuring redesigned heads, an improved valvetrain and a sport-tuned exhaust, this engine was well-suited for the Pace Truck package. The clean engine bay highlights its well-preserved condition, complete with Mopar Magnum valve covers. A heavy-duty 4-speed automatic transmission pairs with the engine, while power steering and power front disc brakes enhance drivability.

All Pace Trucks shared the same eye-catching color scheme: Brilliant Blue Pearl with Quartz White dual stripes, matching the Viper GTS. This example features dealer-installed Pace Truck decals, red lettering, a Dodge windshield banner and official Indy 500 race insignia. Inside, the cabin offers a comfortable cloth bench seat with a fold-down center storage console. Convenience features include air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD stereo with pushbutton controls, cruise control, a factory in-dash tachometer, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and power locks and windows. Completing the package are factory 17-inch cast aluminum wheels wrapped in the original Goodyear Eagle blackwall tires.

Documenting this special example are the window sticker, owner’s manuals, corporate documentation showing the sale to a private party, pictures of it used on track and more.
