The Story
For 1970, the Chevrolet Nova SS could be ordered with the fearsome L78 big block—a high-performance 396 CI V-8 officially rated at 375 HP. The solid-lifter L78 features a high-lift camshaft, forged internals and an 800 CFM Holley carburetor, delivering exceptional high-RPM performance. Power is channeled through a close-ratio Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, sending it to a heavy-duty 12-bolt Positraction rear axle—Chevrolet’s most durable driveline combination of the muscle car era.
This 1970 Nova SS is finished in its original and striking Code 52 Sunflower Yellow, a vibrant one-year-only color that perfectly complements the Nova’s clean, aggressive lines. As a Super Sport, this Nova features correct SS badging, blackout grille, simulated hood air intakes, bright wheel opening moldings and performance suspension upgrades. Inside, the purposeful black vinyl cockpit retains its factory muscle car character with a floor-mounted shifter, bucket seating and simple, driver-focused instrumentation.
One of the rarest and most desirable Novas produced, the 1970 L78 SS combined Chevrolet’s most potent big block with a lightweight, no-nonsense body style. Well-restored and presented in its factory-correct Sunflower Yellow, this example embodies the essence of Chevrolet’s late-1960s/early-1970s big-block performance and remains a highly collectible muscle car today.
