The Story
For 1958, the full-size General Motors lineup was completely reengineered and redesigned across the board. New chassis, steering, rear suspensions and even new V-8 engines joined the mix. At Chevrolet, the Impala name became the new topline offering, supplanting the Bel Air a half rung. The all-new car was undersprung by the new Safety-Girder frame complete with X-type construction, three crossmembers and a center tube. The rear suspension geometry was changed from the traditional leaf spring design to coils with three control arms, and a jointed steering shaft with components positioned forward of the front wheels created a new steering experience.
This 1958 Chevrolet Impala presents very nicely in the stunning shade of code 923 Rio Red that is complemented by tons of brightwork all around the car. Under the hood is an optional 348 CI V-8 engine with the highly collectible Tri-Power carburetion and an automatic transmission. Power steering and power brakes are added to the equipment list, along with the Wonderbar AM radio.
The red interior features black, silver and red tri-tone inserts, a red and silver steering wheel, an in-dash clock, a split-back bench seat and red carpeting. This full-size sedan is rolling on wide whitewall tires and full-diameter spinner wheel covers. The Impala name would go on to become part of Chevrolet’s model lineup for decades to come, and this 1958 Chevrolet Impala is an excellent example of how it all began.
