The Story
The Camaro was introduced in 1967 to attack the Mustang’s success, and the first way to do that was to beat them at the race track to prove its worth. The Z28 performance package reflected Chevrolet’s entry in the SCCA Trans-Am race series, which included a solid-lifter 302 V-8, 4-speed manual transmission, power disc brakes and two wide bold stripes down the hood and decklid.
Very few Z28 examples came with the Rally Sport “RS” package, which included a unique front fascia with concealed headlights, simulated rear fender louvers and wheel opening moldings. The added styling of the RS is considered by many Camaro enthusiasts as the ultimate muscle car look and is arguably the most popular.
A part of the Camaro Z28’s racing success came from the newly available cross-ram 2x4-barrel intake setup that arrived in 1968. While Camaros racing in the 1967 Trans-Am series ran with single 4-barrel carburetors, the SCCA soon changed the rules to allow “not more than two 4-barrel carburetors,” giving Chevrolet engineers the green light to develop their own dual carburetion system for Trans-Am homologation. The result was the now-famous Dual Cross Ram intake system.
