The Story
By the early 1970s, Chevrolet’s Corvette remained America’s only true series-production sports car, despite the increasingly strict demands of federally mandated emission controls, punishing insurance rates and new “real world” net power ratings. The 1972 models marked the end of an era with their third-generation styling theme left intact, including the handsome slim chrome front bumpers, which were replaced by a blunter urethane front bumper the next model year. Despite the seeming assault on high-performance cars during the 1970s, the 1972 Corvette’s production totals far exceeded those of the strike-shortened 1970 model year and the slightly more robust number built for ’71.
This unrestored and impressively original Corvette was produced on May 9, 1972, and delivered new to Hawkeye Motor Company in Burlington, Iowa (Dealer Code 279 in Zone 47), according to the official NCRS Shipping Data Report. It was ordered new in the ultra-rare Code 37 Bryar Blue paint complemented by a black vinyl interior. Power is provided by the matching-numbers L48 350/200 HP V-8 engine backed by a Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission and 3.08 rear end. Desirable features and options include factory air conditioning, T-tops, power brakes and steering, and an AM/FM radio.
What makes this example special is it has only traveled a mere 8,922 miles from new, documented through ownership history and letters from previous owners. The car appears today as it left the dealership new, still wearing its original Bryar Blue paint and original black vinyl interior. Mechanically this car remains in exceptionally original condition still retaining its original carburetor, alternator, radiator, belts, air conditioning, master cylinder, booster, distributor, exhaust, suspension and even its original date-coded Firestone white-line tires.
